In Chapter Four of “The Heart of the Hollow World”, Emery takes Pru to a party at his father’s house, where she feels out of place as a guest. Emery promises her she will meet some interesting people, and she does, including Mark Twain and Emery’s ex-fiance.

At the party, Emery is tries to convince his father to give him the money he needs to finish building the machine that will take him and his companions to the center of the Earth.
